A recommender manages preprint evaluation. Their role is very similar to that of a journal editor (handling preprints, finding reviewers, collecting reviews, making editorial decisions based on reviews), with the article eventually being recommended (or not) after one or more rounds of reviews. PCI Microbiol recommenders can recommend up to five articles per year. They are expected to comply with the code of conduct of PCI Microbiol, are eligible for selection as a member of the Managing Board for a period of two years, and can propose the nomination of new recommenders to the Managing Board.

The Managing Board of PCI Microbiol usually selects people who have gained experience as a reviewer for Q1 journals, have at least a couple of papers with their name in first or last position or as corresponding author, and have conducted independent research within any of the thematic fields of PCI Microbiol. PCI has signed the Joint Statement of Principles of the Coalition for Diversity and Inclusion in Scholarly Communication, which we at PCI Microbiol fully support. We aim to have strong representation across fields of research, geographic regions, genders, and other areas in which some groups of people have been traditionally underrepresented in academia.
